Can your server room handle a power outage?

Written by Clinton Keeler | 12 May 2021

A power cut, a power failure, a blackout – whatever you call it, a power outage can be disastrous for any business. A loss of electrical power can last anywhere from a few minutes to days. A simple hiccup in power can cause irreversible damage such as permanent data loss – an IT nightmare!

Survey results by Uptime Institute show that 78% of data centres suffered power failures in the last three years, with 75% being avoidable outages. The impact of a power outage is broad and deep. It generally means downtime, loss of business, added costs and lots of stress! Needless to say, data centre outages are expensive. According to a 2016 report, the average total cost of an unplanned outage is around $8,851 per minute. So, how do you protect your data (and your business) from the risks associated with a power outage?

An Intelligent Solution

You cannot prevent lightning strikes, but you can avoid business disruptions with a Zella Zense

The Zella Sense Advanced Intelligence and Automation is included in all our products and allows you to create automations to prevent issues and react to events in real-time. For example, in the event of a power cut, where you only have one power source available, you may want to maximise the UPS runtime of your critical devices by shutting down the non-critical IT devices. Alternatively, after a certain period, the mains power has still not returned, Zella Sense can initiate a graceful shutdown. If there is a backup generator on-site, you can automate the backup generator through Zella Sense with rules, events, and vibration sensors tracked through the monitoring platform.

Zella Sense monitors the Zella Pro's internal and external environment and enables IT staff to create a sequence of protocols and a hierarchy of alarms. These alerts can then be sent to different people, allowing teams to work on various issues simultaneously. IT managers can access real-time reports, manage remote sites using their mobile and run periodic fire drill testing to ensure each alarm and systems activate.
